Christmas Food and Wines Pairings

This Christmas at Gaucho is sure to be a memorable one and we have a wonderful menu this year (read our Top Picks with Chef Anthony here). Read on for Marina’s wine recs!

CHRISTMAS MAINS

For those opting for our Roast Ballotine of Turkey, we have a few excellent wines that pair very nicely with the subtle flavours of this dish. If you want to play it safe, Marina recommends a white wine such as the Karia Chardonnay 2019 Stag (Napa Valley, California) to complement the roast turkey with its well-rounded and buttery notes or for a fresher, fuller-bodied take plump for the Alpasion Chardonnay 2021 (Uco Valley, Mendoza). If reds are more your style, a rich Pinot Noir would also work well. Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes (Burgundy, France) offers a sophisticated and silky mouthfeel while the Chacra (Rio Negra, Patagonia) is the epitome of elegance thanks to the cool climate of the vineyards that the grapes grow in.

The Beef Wellington with mushroom stuffing and red wine jus is a wintry classic made with one of the finest beef cuts, the fillet. This dish pairs beautifully with a full-bodied Burgundy such as the Savigny-Lés-Beaune Vieilles Vignes 2002 (Maison Roche de Bellene, Burgundy, France). This wine is rich yet still very elegant, with a silky-smooth and refreshing mouthfeel along with notes of red fruits.

STEAKS

If you’re choosing between one of our steaks for your Christmas dinner we’ve got a few excellent suggestions. For the Cuadril, Marina would recommend a Patagonian Malbec, Maria Victoria 2017 (Rio Negro, Patagonia) to balance out the distinctively gamey, mineral flavour of the rump with its medium tannins and notes of crunchy red fruits.

For the Lomo, a champagne such as the Laurent Perrier Rose would marry very nicely, providing enough structure from the Pinot Noir grapes to match the flavour of this delicate cut. Another great choice would be Benmarco  Sin Limited Malbec 2020 (Susana Balbo, Gualtallary) a medium-bodied red from Uco Valley, which offers a rounded, velvety profile with very soft tannins. For the Chorizo, Luigi Bosca DOC 2020  from well-known Malbec region, Lujan de Cuyo, is an excellent option to pair with the classic flavour of the sirloin. Full-bodied and perfectly balanced in acidity and fruitiness to complement the juiciness of the Chorizo cut.

DESSERTS

We have a stunning line-up of scrumptious festive desserts to round-off your meal at Gaucho and plenty of incredible dessert wines too!

Our Chestnut Semifreddo is a Gaucho fave, it’s a refreshing take on the traditional Christmas flavours with a Latin twist. The cool creaminess of this dessert will pair well with the bubbles of a Pommery Brut Rose.

If you want something a bit more decadent, our Basque Dulce de Leche Cheesecake served with a sour cherry compote is always a winner and goes perfectly with a Susana Signature Malbec.

Malamado is a sweet, fortified Malbec made in a Port-style that pairs fabulously with Chocolate brownie or our cheese platter. The wine has notes of black fruits, mocha, and sweet spices that complement the richness of chocolate and cheeses.
