While the Welsh patron saint of love and lovers may not have had a conventional love story, her desire to protect true love in her name has lasted through the ages. The 25th January marks St Dwynwen’s Day, where each year we celebrate love in all its forms, with hopefully more luck than Dwynwen herself.
Between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th January, join us to indulge in a feast designed to share with someone you love, be it platonic or romantic. Choose a steak to share from our signature list:
Add on your choice of sides and sauce before finishing with a sweet strawberry and raspberry mille-feuille. Two spoons, of course.
Available 24th – 26th January, all day. Quote DWYNWEN when booking.
The Legend of St Dwynwen’s Day
There are many variations on her story, but generally it’s said that Dwynwen was the one of twenty-four daughters of King Brychan of South Wales. Her father arranged her marriage with a neighbouring prince, but she had other ideas. Dwynwen had instead fallen in love with local man Maelon Dafodril.
When Maelon went to King Brychan to ask for Dwywen’s hand he refused, and Maelon turned on Dwywen in anger. To forget him, Dwynwen fled to the woods where she was visited by a helpful spirit who promised her that Maelon would no longer bother her, as the spirit had turned him into a block of ice.
Upon hearing this, Dwywen made three wishes: to thaw Maelon, to never fall in love or marry, and thirdly for true love to be protected in her name. All three wishes were granted, and we still celebrate St Dwywen’s Day over 1,500 years later.
