The Perfect Side Dishes for Steak

At Gaucho, we take pride in doing steak like no one else. Since 1994, we’ve sourced the finest beef from the Las Pampas region of Argentina, selecting pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle—a distinguished Scottish breed introduced to Argentina in 1879 by Don Carlos Guerrero. With steak of such exceptional quality, it’s only fitting to pair it with a side dish that complements its premium flavour.

Bursting with beautiful colours, exceptional flavours, and exquisite textures, our chefs have carefully selected a plethora of perfect accompaniments to your meal. Stuck on what sides to order with your steak? Can’t make sense of the abundance of choices on our menu? Look no further! We’ve made your life easier with this comprehensive guide to the perfect sides to serve with steak.

What to Pair with Steak

While our sumptuous cuts can be enjoyed by themselves, we usually recommend pairing the steak with two sides each—excellent for savouring with friends and family alike.

At Gaucho, we firmly believe that the best meals are shared, thanks to our roots in Argentine tradition, namely in Asado. Asado emphasises coming together with friends and family to enjoy the warmth and simplicity of the grill, wonderful company, and exquisite food.

Naturally, in our restaurants, such a culture is central to our menu, and therefore greatly influences what sides we have to offer. For the ultimate sharing experience, we have a vast array of different dishes, sure to appeal to everyone’s taste.

Traditional Steak Sides

Our menu features classics, traditionally served with steak, such as hand-cut chips, mushrooms, and spinach, which can all be traced in origin to France (though Belgium also claims ownership of the chip).

The *slight* French inclination of our menu is thanks to our Culinary Director, Anthony Ekizian, whose expertise was honed through his training in Saint Tropez. However, in true Gaucho style, he has ensured that these sides are nearly always prepared with an elevated, Argentinian twist.

Here’s a closer look at how Gaucho’s steak side dishes bring together global flavours with distinctive flair:

Hand-Cut Chips with Chimichurri Salt

A Gaucho favourite! Our chips are dusted with chimichurri salt for an Argentinian, herb-forward touch. It’s a classic that’s hard to beat. Chimichurri is a Latin American staple, bursting with flavours of garlic, parsley, and red pepper. The freshness of the Chimichurri adds a zingy kick to the tender texture of the steak.

Confit Mushrooms

Confit Mushrooms served with butter, thyme, and garlic, this side strikes a beautiful balance between rich, earthy herb flavours and the sweetness of the butter.

Lemon and Garlic Spinach

Dashed with lemon, and cooked with garlic, its silky-smooth texture incorporates a savoury, tart touch to your meal.

Authentic Argentinian Steak Sides

While these options are all superb pairings for your steak, if you’re in search of a more traditionally Argentinian experience, there are a few choices on our menu that may appeal to you. For a true taste of Argentina, Anthony recommends authentic side dishes that showcase the simplicity cherished in Argentine cuisine. In Asado culture, Anthony highlights that less is more, so staples like corn, potatoes, and green salad are timeless choices. Alongside his favourite side—chips—here are a couple of menu items that will help you become a bona fide Asado expert:

Humita

This Latin American staple features thick, steamed corn served with whipped cheese and a touch of vibrant ancho chilli oil.

Creamed Mashed Potato

Originally British, this side combines milk and cream for a delightfully rich texture that complements the steak’s exquisite flavours without overpowering them.

Chargrilled Baby Gem Lettuce

A homage to the grill, this dish is drizzled with Caesar dressing—a fresh, authentic nod to Asado simplicity.

European Steak Sides

Given Argentina’s rich European influences, predominantly its Italian and Spanish heritage, we also offer sides that honour its plethora of diverse flavours, traditions, and culinary techniques. These dishes on our menu blend classic European preparations with the vibrant, bold ingredients of Latin cuisine, creating a fusion that pays homage to Argentina’s unique gastronomic history.

Sauteed Broccoli

A nod to Spanish flavours, this dish combines an irresistible crunch and zest with its roasted almonds, and infusions of garlic and lemon.

Honey Roasted Vegetables

Alternatively, if you’re craving home comforts, the Honey Roasted Vegetables are influenced by the staple vegetable diet of British cuisine. Served with thyme, rosemary, and garlic, it’s our homage to Great British traditions, combining the warmth of classic roast flavours with a hint of sweetness from the honey. This dish adds a cosy, rustic feel to the table.

Truffle Mac and Cheese

A comforting twist on a U.S. classic, infused with Italian Taleggio, Swiss Gruyère, and a lemon-herb crumb, bringing a kaleidoscope of exciting European flavours to your plate.

Elevate Your Dining With Steak Sauces

To elevate your meal, why not try a selection of delicious sauces to customise your dining experience? Take our chimichurri (the inspiration behind our namesake salt) or the warmer firecracker chimichurri, which delivers a fiery kick to the classic recipe.

If you fancy something more traditional, we serve a buttery, bright Béarnaise, perfect for adding a smooth, tangy taste that complements the savoury notes of your steak. Alternatively, our creamy peppercorn sauce offers a robust, picante flavour to your dish, ideal for those who want to add depth and richness.

Whether you’re in the mood for a bold pairing or something simple and traditional, our menu has the best side dishes for your steak. Book your table now for an unforgettable steak experience of warmth, sharing—and above all—exquisite food!
